Book Review: Unwept

You know those special books that grab you right away and don't let go? This is one of those. However, if you're expecting something from the Dragonlance Queen similar to her other titles, this is not the place to look. I never would have guessed Tracy Hickman co-authored this if I didn't know.

This is sort of a historical paranormal mystery with hints of steampunk. Now that's a mouthful. But really, it's all in there and it is mixed rather brilliantly. The beginning of this book shocked me profoundly in a way none other aside from Across The Universe has. This novel is a deep mystery that will keep you guessing. I'd like to say until the very end, but no, it will just keep you guessing. But you'll love every moment of it.

My only complaints were the abrupt ending and the title that seemed to have nothing to do with the book (a pet peeve of mine). I will definitely purchase and read the sequel.

Find it on:

The ARC of this book was provided to me by the publisher for review through NetGalley for an honest review.

The Wonderfulness that was RT

Myself, Tee Tate, Tina Moss, and Yelena Casale
I struggled so much over this post because I wasn't sure how to write it. Attending RT was very emotional for me, in a wonderful way. Like many of you writers out there, I've struggled to break in with each book that I have written, and eventually went indie after having an agent and failing to sell to editors due to many of them already having filled their 'paranormal list' for the time.

If you follow myself or Tee Tate on Facebook or Twitter then you may have heard the news that the RT Book Lover's Convention was amazing for me in many ways. First, I had the opportunity to meet many of my online friends in person for the first time. They were just as fantastic in person as they are on line, a rare and wonderful thing. And...*dramatic pause*... I had the phenomenal good luck to win second place in the RT Convention's American Idol Author Competition. While the RT website says only the first place winner will receive agent mentorship, this year all top three placers are receiving it! That means I have a year long mentorship with the fabulous, and I mean Fabulous with a capital F, Nicole Resciniti of Seymour Agency and Louise Fury of the Bent Agency. These ladies are amazing and so incredibly sweet.

I've entered many contests over the years and have never won. But I kept writing and I kept striving to improve. It finally paid off in a HUGE way. Not only did I win the contest but everyone I pitched to while I was there asked for either a full or partial. I can't tell you how many times I've watched things like this happen to others and wondered what I needed to do to accomplish such a wonder. Now I know. You just need to keep writing, most importantly keep striving to improve your writing, and then get out there and try-Hard. The work isn't over though, it's just beginning, so off to editing for me!

Release Day Blitz for The Space Beyond by Kristie Cook

Release Day Blitz!

Today is release day for The Space Beyond (Part Two in the Book of Phoenix) by Kristie Cook!! If you haven't read The Space Between (Part One in the Book of Phoenix), it's on sale for 99c! (Links below) - Join Kristie, along with author Lynn Rush, whose book Absolute Zero releases on May 21st! It's an ongoing DUAL RELEASE CELEBRATION starting TONIGHT with several guest author appearances! https://www.facebook.com/events/509122122526573

Kristie even took the time out of her crazy schedule to answer some fun questions for us. Thanks for coming Kristie! Tell us something quirky about your writing process? Lately, it’s been peanut butter M&Ms. When I start a new scene or session, I take a handful out of a very large bag and put them on my desk next to my keyboard. Then I sort them by color and arrange them in a pretty design. Starting with the color with the least amount, I eat them one-by-one as I start getting into the scene. Usually by the time I finish, I’m in my other world and typing away. Depending on the size of the handful, though, and the complexity of the scene, I might need a second little scoop to push me along. :)

Who was the hardest character to write for you, and why? Bex, although I can’t really say she was the hardest character to write – her voice came so easily to me – but her story is painfully difficult. I put the poor girl through hell, and my heart aches for her. There’s a certain villain who was hard to write only because he made me sick. And angry. I wanted to maim him in certain ways. The Book of Phoenix itself is kind of a character, too, and it was definitely the hardest to write. It took me forever to discover everything about it, and I still don’t know that I have. I guess we’ll find out in Part Three. :)

Do you have a favorite scene in this book? Hmm…there are so many scenes with Bex that I love, including her memories of her childhood as well as the K-bomb (a field party). But there’s also parts at the end that I love, too, but can’t say what because I don’t want to spoil. It’s a scene with Jeric and Asia, a new girl, and I think the reader will do a little fist pump and a “Yes!” at that point, too.

What do you have in store for us after this? The Space Within, Part Three in The Book of Phoenix, comes out in July. It’s the last book in this series, so it’ll be bittersweet to wrap it up. Then I’m on to finishing the Soul Savers Series with Books 6 and 7. They’ll be written – and released - back–to-back later this year. It’ll be strange to finish both of these series this year, but I won’t be leaving the worlds for good. I have spin-off and companion ideas for both series. We’ll see what 2015 brings.

We also have a GIVEAWAY to share with you!! Look for how to enter down below!

Hearts break, souls shatter, love lies in The Space Beyond...

As members of the Phoenix, Jeric and Leni are thrust into their new lives, expected to lead Earth’s Guardians. But Leni struggles with trusting her own soul, and Jeric is more concerned about keeping Leni safe than meeting others’ demands. When Darkness swarms Lake Haven, they embark on their first mission with little preparation and no idea which soul the Dark hunts.

Born and raised in Lake Haven, Bex hopes to escape her small-town life, ideally in the arms of her soul mate. She knows he exists, and her heart aches with the need to find him. When her long-lost mama calls to announce she's knockin' on death's door, Bex reluctantly makes the trip to see the uncaring bitch (bless her heart), only to be knocked off her feet by the sexy and charming Dr. Mason Hayes. Is he really The One?

Leni’s soul felt an instant connection to Bex, but if Bex found her soul mate, she isn’t their mission. So who is, and why does Leni instinctively feel drawn to her? Can Leni even trust her intuition? And will Jeric step up and lead when the time comes or continue to hold them back?

If they don't learn to trust themselves and each other quickly, Darkness will claim them all…along with the rest of Earth’s souls.

When life falls to pieces, answers lie in The Space Between...

Leni Drago can't make a smart decision on her own, according to her mother anyway--the few times she's tried resulted in disaster. When her uncle sends her on a dance tour in Italy to find her real self, she returns to an empty home and any evidence of his existence wiped out. Then things get even stranger, like the mysterious appearances of Jeric Winters--inked, pierced and a hit-'em-and-quit-'em type. He's one decision that should be easy for Leni. Or is he?

Jeric doesn't do girlfriends. Unless they're someone else's. He left the fighting cage and modeling for a reason, and girls who want more than a night of fun are distractions he doesn't need. Especially when they come with as much baggage as Leni carries. But he can't shake the gut feeling that he needs to know her. All of her.

To discover the truth behind their connection and their ties to a journal from 1989, they must face painful secrets from their pasts. And they must do so quickly because their own existences are falling to pieces.

This first part of The Book of Phoenix takes you on a heart-wrenching ride as you discover the answers that lie in The Space Between.

When Darkness threatens, what matters most lies in The Space Within...
Completing a mission that reunites Guardian Twin Flames turns devastating when the Book of Phoenix throws Leni and Brock into a Dark world, leaving Jeric and Asia behind. They count on their other halves to rescue them, but when that doesn’t happen, they must fight through the Darkness and find a Gate that will take them home.

Except all of Earth’s Gates are sealed.

Enyxa, ruler of Darkness, and her horde of Dark souls storm the Gates to push their way through to Earth. While Leni and Brock fight Enyxa on their side, Jeric and Asia must figure out how to save their Twin Flames without jeopardizing all of Earth’s souls. Through it all—and with a little help from Enyxa—Brock and Asia begin questioning their relationship and whether they’re truly meant to be together…or if they’re two Lost souls forced to become one.

If the Broken dyads don’t find each other fast, they’ll be lost to the Dark forever. But to reunite means choosing themselves over all of Earth’s souls. Can Jeric make that decision? And will Brock and Asia find the love they both desperately crave? Or are they all doomed to perpetual Darkness?

Discover how it all ends in The Space Within, the explosive conclusion to The Book of Phoenix trilogy.

RT Convention Here I Come!

This year (this week in face!) I get the distinct pleasure of attending my first Romantic Times Book Lover's Convention and it's in New Orleans! I've never been to the Big Easy so I'm crazy excited. Couple that with the fact that I get to meet some of my very best online buddies in person for the first time and I'm now ecstatic and can barely focus on anything else.

This convention is packed with great workshops, networking and pitching opportunities, parties, and is absolutely star-studded with the likes of Charlaine Harris, Heather Graham, Kelly Armstrong, and more. While those folks are great, the ones I'm truly excited about meeting in person are my dear friends Tee Tate (author Eden Butler), Tina Moss, Yelena Casale, Brenda Drake, Tracy Clark, S.R. Johannes, Trisha Leigh, Noelle Pierce, T.F. Leger, Stina Lindenblatt, Lydia Kang, and more! Can you believe that list? Wow.

But there is another reason I'm going. My adult steampunk novel is finished and ready at last and I'm very excited to be pitching it this year at RT. Set in 17th century Ireland, it is an approach at steampunk that I've never seen taken, so fingers crossed that agents and editors love it as much as I do and don't run screaming from its strangeness. :-)  Wish me fantastic luck, let me know if you're going to be there so I can say hi, and be sure to visit the fabulous ladies listed above. Many of them are signing at Saturdays book fair! I'll blog all about it when I come back.

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

For those who don't know, I love martial arts. It has been an integral part of my life since I was fifteen. I absolutely love a well choreographed fight scene. While I'm not big on the traditional old foreign martial arts film style of using wires to an extreme, I do love an excellent martial arts movie. 47 Ronin surprised me in a very big, and wonderful, way. I'm not sure why, but I didn't expect much out of it. Unfortunately that means I didn't go see it in the theater and I regret that deeply. This would have been phenomenal on the big screen.

The story was excellent, a good, Americanized retelling of the tale of the 47 Ronin. The acting was compelling and I loved Keannu in this role. His fight scenes in particular were quite spectacular. I was reminded of Brad Pitt's scenes in Troy, only better. Yes, you read that right. Keannu's fight scenes were even better. I can hardly believe I wrote that, being such a big fan of Brad in Troy. But there you have it. The ending will shock those who aren't up on their Japanese culture, and many will hate it for that. But it is true to the culture in that way and I loved it for that.

If you're looking for a happily-ever-after or feel good movie, skip this one. But if you love martial arts, spectacular fight scenes, and incredible cinematography with exceptional creatures, then don't miss this.

Flight For Safety is Finally Out!

If you are a fan of thrillers and haven't read one of the newest voices in the genre, then you are in for a treat. Karlene Petitt is an exciting author who isn't afraid to write about touchy subjects that involve the airline industry. Her latest novel, a tie-in to her debut (Flight For Control) involves Darby Bradshaw, a supporting character from the first novel that more than stands on her own. Here is a bit about Flight For Safety:

...an aviation thriller where fiction mirrors truth and each flight is a game of Russian roulette. Aircraft are crashing after computer failures, incidents are occurring worldwide, coming close to hull losses, with mismanagement of aircraft navigation systems, and airline training programs are being cancelled. Aerodynamic skills are failing and the new generation pilots never learned them. But when Darby Bradshaw learns what is happening at her airline, she steps into a far-reaching conspiracy where she has become the target.

My official review:
This is a stellar aviation thriller by a brilliant mind that clearly knows their way around the airline industry and isn't afraid to speak out about it. Darby Bradshaw is a spunky, independent woman who is a blast to read about. I would highly recommend this novel for any fan of thriller novels, and fans of strong female protagonists.

Happy May Day!

This day has been celebrated as many things over the centuries: the Festival of Flora in honor of the  Roman goddess of flowers, Beltane the festival of fertility (now you know what dancing around the May pole signifies ;), and the German festival of Walpurgis Night (night of the witches' meeting). But far more recently it has been celebrated as the coming of spring and in many cultures flowers are left at the doorstep of women. So I offer to you these flowers, a photo I took while in Chelan Washington last year. Happy spring!
