Writer's Road Recap: Finding Betas and Crit Groups

Here is an abbreviated recap of last Monday's chat on finding the right beta readers or critique group: Heather McCorkle   Finding beta readers or critique groups can be the easy part. Finding GOOD ones, and keeping them, is much harder. #WritersRoad Yelena Casale   to  @HeatherMcCorkle There has to be a good balance betw a constructive critique and encouragement #writersroad Heather McCorkle   The key is to know what you're looking for in betas or crit partners, and be ready to reciprocate. #WritersRoad Karen Strong   It's important to know what you're looking for: Do you want structure, grammar, character development? Helps to know first. #WritersRoad Karen Strong   For instance, I'm not much into grammar and misspellings. I like having CPs who can do structure/plot/character stuff. #WritersRoad Melinda Primrose   to  @Yelena_Casale and you have to be willing to take the constructive criticism #write...

Movie Review: Riddick

Image
Just the name Riddick gives me chills of the very best kind. Many would scoff at such a movie, call it cultish, violent and plotless. And that's okay, Riddick isn't for everyone. But he is most definitely for me. The Riddick franchise began with Pitch Black , continued with The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (animated), then The Chronicles of Riddick movie followed, and finally, Riddick released this year.  What has drawn me so much to this series? A fantastically flawed character who balances over the precipice of right and wrong, living in the gray area that can be darker than pitch black (Like how I tied that in? ;). And to me there is nothing better than a beautifully choreographed fight scene, which you will find many of in this series. With over half my life spent studying martial arts, I have a taste for it like few other things. That said, if you don't like violent movies, this series likely isn't for you. This latest installation was the best, in my ...

Book Review: The Companions by R. A. Salvatore

Image
Lovers of epic fantasy the world over know R.A. Salavatore and many cherish his books as classics and staples of the genre. I of course am one of the many. If you love epic fantasy and have never read Salvatore, get ye to the bookstore my friend. The Companions is a rebirth, in more ways than one, of my favorite characters from Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels involving the Companions of the Hall. This novel was a rich tapestry of all the things I love about Salvatore's writing, details that breathe life into the world, a grand cause, and grander schemes. You will come to love the Companions of the Hall all over again in completely new ways. It is told from mutliple points of view and covers many years. I particularly enjoyed Bruenor's journey, but then I've always been a swooner for the warrior types (yes, even if they're dwarves). If you haven't read Salvatore's earlier Forgotten Realms novels that involve the companions, then I highly recommen...

Writer's Road Recap: Subplots

Here is an abbreviated recap of our last chat in August on Subplots. It's a short one because we did a half hour chat and half hour word war challenge: Heather McCorkle   Subplots can add depth and intrigue when balanced right. When balanced wrong, they can confuse and lose the reader. #WritersRoad Krissi Dallas   Subplots should effectively tie in to overall theme & plot! Don't let them be pointless... #writersroad TS Tate (Tee)   From WD: Think of subplots as simply strands of stories that support or drive the main plot. #WritersRoad TS Tate (Tee)   subplots can: Advance your story in satisfying increments. #writersroad TS Tate (Tee)   Unleash transformative forces on your main characters: growth or corruption, gain or loss. #WritersRoad TS Tate (Tee)   Pivot your action, provide twists. #WritersRoad TS Tate (Tee)   Induce mood: menace, comedy, pathos, triumph. #WritersRoad TS Tate (Tee)  ...
