How Music Inspired A Story

Today I'm thrilled to welcome my good friend~and fabulous author of adult sci-fi~Jessica E. Subject over for a chat about her latest release. Take it away Jessica!

First of all, thank you, Heather for hosting me on your wonderful blog!
Hello, everyone! I’m Jessica Subject, and I write science fiction romance and contemporary romance. Just last week, I released my first indie title, Alien Adoration. It is the first in a trilogy titled Alien Next Door.

Now, this story all started when I was cleaning the wreck room, listening to music on my phone. The song ‘Spaceman’ by Bif Naked came on, and the following lyrics really stuck in my mind:

Spaceman, oh spaceman!

Come rescue me from this!
Calling all aliens!
Come rescue me!

Here, I imagine the heroine secretly calling for help from a not-so-perfect life.

Remember that night at my window
When I waved at you?
I must have been only five, or so,
But I never forgot you.

I really did see a little girl staring out her window, waving at an alien. This scene is in the story.

I wonder why you choose those others
And you never come to call on me.
When I'm the one who's waiting for you
I really need you - please pick me!

This is how Rachel feels about her sexy next door neighbor. He’s a bit of a playboy. Or so she thinks.

I see your face on television, almost every day
In magazines and on the big screen
Close yet far away

Now, this part can be interpreted as being two parts of the story. First of all, we see aliens in magazines, on television, and in movies. But there is also a scene near the end of the story that comes from this part of the song.
So, as you can imagine, I listened to Spaceman a lot while writing this story. Some of the other songs on the Alien Adoration playlist are:

Back In Time by Pitbull
Before You by Chantal Kreviazuk
E.T. by Katy Perry
I Could Get Used To This by The Veronicas
I Do Not Hook Up by Kelly Clarkson
We Found Love by Rihanna

    1. Thank you Natalie! Yes, inspiration comes from everywhere. Sometimes it's just a line in a story, and other times, an entire story. :)

  2. It's always awesome to a song inspire a story and how, thanks for sharing! And congrats!

  3. What a cool story of how you were inspired to write that book! You must have been thrilled at that epiphany (and that you got to stop cleaning to go write it down!)

I would probably freak at first, seeing an alien outside of my window. But, I'm hoping my Trekkie instincts would take over and I'd want to talk to him and find out more about him...especially if he was a hot alien ;)

    1. Hi Lauren!

Yes, took me a little longer to clean that day. ;)

I'd hope to react the same way. Though wouldn't know until it actually happened.

  5. What a generous giveaway! Congrats on the release, Jessica.

I'm the same way. Music has such a big influence on my writing. I have to listen to sad songs in order to write emotional scenes, or angry music for battle scenes, lol.

Two songs popped into my head when I read this: The Katy Perry song, and Spaceman by The Killers. Both have awesome videos, but well, The Killers has Brandon. He's so dreamy <3

    1. Thank you, meryvamp! Yes, music definitely can get you in the right frame of mind to write emotional scenes. I have E.T. by Katy Perry on my playlists, and I'll have to check out the other. :)

  6. Music does inspire our writing, doesn't it? I wrote a post just today (last night actually) on the soundtracks of our novels and how important music is to us as human beings. May your sales shoot to the stars. :-)

    1. Hi Diane! *waves* I've loved that song since it first came out, but during that one moment, it inspired a story. :) Thank you!

  8. If I looked out my bedroom window and saw an alien on the street, I wouldn't at all be surprised. I live in hick country and have seen my fair share of "unusual" and I wish there were some things you could "unsee" LOL! Thanks for sharing the book! It sounds really good!

    2. If I saw an Alien outside my window my reaction would be based on what it was doing, and what it looked like :)

You book sounds marvelous Jessica. Have a good weekend to you both.

  9. I always liked the Byrds' "Mr. Spaceman" too...the way the guy is aching to be taken along on the spaceship makes me chuckle. I know there's plenty of space-themed glam, too, but I need to check the newer ones out!

  11. It's great to meet you, Jessica! I really like the way you broke down how the song inspired different aspects to character and story. I have a few songs that have done that for me, too!

    Best of luck!

    1. Thank you so much, SA! I've had a line from a song inspire me before, but this was the first time so much of a song helped me to write a story. :-)
