I'm beyond excited that Ebony McKenna has finally been able to release The Summer of Shambles in the United States, and with such an amazing cover! Of course I loved the cover her UK publisher Egmont made for her, but this US cover really fits the book quite well. If you haven't read Ebony's books yet, you are in for a treat. It's a hilarious paranormal that's totally unpredictable with quirky characters that you will instantly love. I haven't had this much fun reading a book in a long time. I literally laughed out loud! If you enjoyed The Princess Bride or Ella Enchanted then this book is one you must read. Dare I say, in many ways I think it even out-shined those. This novel has the perfect mixture of magic, fun, and romance. Ebony made me a fan for life with this book. A new series from the author of one of my favorite series of all time, Vampire Academy. I was psyched and could hardly wait to start reading it. But then... I've come to expect a certain level of writing from Richelle Mead, one that sucks me in immediately, endears to the characters, and immerses me in her world. That didn't happen as much as I would have liked with this new world of hers. Without having read the synopsis I wouldn't have guessed there was anything mythological in this book at all until after about a hundred pages in, and even then, it's lightly brushed over for a long time. It's one thing to build mystery, but another entirely to keep the readers utterly in the dark to the point where they start to lose interest. Which is unfortunately what happened for me with this book. This was too slow moving for me as well, too much like a thriller instead of a dystopian fantasy.  So why three stars? This week on the #WritersRoad (a weekly reoccurring chat on Twitter that I co-host) we chatted about reviews, tours and launches. What works for author, what they should do, shouldn't do, that kind of thing. It was a great chat, I hope you had a chance to drop in. #WriteTip: When going through the editing process, keep those chapters that you end up deleting, especially the one's on back story. Those tidbits can make excellent promotional material and could even turn into a novella that you can price at free to help get your name out there. Skeptical? It worked for me. My novella, Born Of Fire has been downloaded 10,000 (yay, can you believe it?! *dances in confetti*) times this month alone (however it takes a lot of work and getting the word out on the right sites to accomplish this). In March I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC (advanced reader copy) of Still Sucks To Be Me , a young adult paranormal by Kimberly Pauley. I'm really glad I did because I haven't read anything this unique in a long time. As many of you know, unique in the literary world can damn you or make you. In this case I'd have to say it definitely makes the book. Still Sucks To Be Me is a story about a girl who has made the difficult choice to become a vampire and has to deal with the consequences. Don't shy away folks, this is no Twilight knockoff, not by a long shot. Kimberly has a way of getting us into her character's life as if we were living it right alongside her. Mina is such a beleivable person that I feel like I could walk down the street and bump into her.
