Wednesday Write Goal

I've discovered that if I have writing goals and give voice to them, knowing my friends will help hold me accountable, then I end up getting a lot more writing done. Twitter is wonderful for short bursts of writing inspiration and accountability. We have #1k1hr (one thousand words in one hour) where one of us will tweet that and see if anyone else is game. If others are able to join in then we all use the #1k1hr hashtag and check back in at the end of the hour to see how much we accomplished. There is also #wordwar which is like a sprint to see how much we can get done in whatever timeframe we all agree upon.

But there isn't always someone on Twitter that is up for a writing goal or challenge, and I know there are many of you who don't use twitter. So, I've decided to start a new reoccurring post called Wednesday #WriteGoal (sorry about the hashtag for my non-Twitter friends, but this way my Twitter friends can join in too). I won't do it every week because there are times I'll have other things to blog about, but I'm going to try and do it every other week, starting today. If I have to miss a week because of a special post then we'll do it the week after.

Here's how Wednesday #WriteGoal will work. I'll set a goal for the word count that I would like to get done by the next Wednesday #WriteGoal check in. Then each of you can leave a comment with your writing goal for the week. Not writing at the moment? No problem, leave a comment about your editing goal, or even your reading goal. Reading is just as important to a writer as writing! We can hold each other accountable with Wednesday #WriteGoal check-in and help encourage one another that way. My #WriteGoal is to reach page 230 on my editing of my sequel that I'm working on (I'm currently on 200). How about you peeps?

  1. Okay, I'll play. :) My writing goal this week is:

Revise 3 chapters on last WiP
    Continue research on upcoming WiP
Try to outline upcoming WiP (I'm NOT an outliner. At all. BUT, this one will be complicated, thus I shall try.)

    Huggles,
    Lola

  2. Heather, I love this idea. I am going to have a #writegoal of working on my A330 training manual. Not a word count thing for this, but completion thing. My #writegoal for next week is to have 50% of my study guide complete, and 2 weeks of blogs in draft, for when I head to Chicago for my grandson's birth.

Can I do it with grandkids from now through Sunday? I'm going to try! It's a #writegoal. Thanks for a great idea.

  3. This is a fantastic idea, Heather. I just added a scene to my manuscript while I was revising yesterday that is going to lead me to a whole thread development. So My #WriteGoal for next Weds. is to identify how to weave that thread into the rest of the book, and take at least one more scene step that direction.

  4. Great idea, I can use a little accountability!:)

My #writegoal is to complete and submit my short story "Snowtrapped!" into a UK based writing contest :)

*can use a lot of happy, fuzzy, encouraging thoughts sent my way :D

  5. I wish you much success with your Wed. word goal. I pack so much into my days that it is hard to pack anymore : I worked all day yesterday, then most of the night until I greeted the rose of the dawn. Now, I am off to do it again.

The pain from my chest down my left arm is trying to remind me that I am but human -- unlike my hero, Sam McCord! LOL. Roland

Karlene, you can do it! Just don't forget totake time to sleep. :)

Linda, yay for new plot threads! That sounds excellent.

  8. Saba, happy, fuzzy, encouraging thoughts coming your way right now!

Roland, you should make a goal to relax and treat yourself, even if only for a little while each week. :)

  9. Great idea, Heather! My #writegoal will be 7000 words by next Wednesday. I'm at 32k in the WIP, so I'd like to get that to 39k. I'm determined to have the first draft done by the end of September at the latest.

  10. I need to bite the bullet and dive into some re-writes that I've been avoiding. :-)

  11. Tina, whoo! I love your enthusiasm, you go girl!

  12. A group of us used to get up early on Saturdays and email each other when we were up (we spanned all 4 time zones and adjusted accordingly) and then posted an hour later what we had done and if we were able to continue or not. I got a ton done that way. Hmm, I wonder what happened to that...

    Thx!

  14. Karen, excellent goal, happy revising!

Erica, I love that idea! Maybe we can revive it. :)

Monica, 5k sounds awesome, go for it! *breaks out pom poms...*

  15. What a great idea, Heather! I tend to write so spontaneously, so it's harder for me to set goals, but if I'm around and writing, I'll be sure to check it out!

  16. Oh, I like this. My write goal is to work on a query letter for my WIP. It seems simple but you have no idea the torment.

  17. Carol, that's okay, I love your spontaniousness! I probably totally spelled that wrong. ;)

Christa, I don't envy you. I hate query letter writing! Best of luck.

  18. Oooh, this sounds like fun!! You always come up with some fantastic ideas! My write goal for the week is 2k words a day. I’m going to be headed to a writers conference over the weekend and I need to double up on my minimum word goal (which is 1k) since I will likely be unable to write over the weekend due to a busy schedule. 2k is my minimum, while 3k would be preferable, but I will still make my personal deadline of completion if I stick with 2k. I’m a big fan of #1k1hr and plan at least one every day. It really kicks my but into gear. Happy writing everyone!!

  19. Aw, thank you. That's a great goal Lindsey! I love your dedication. I'm a big fan of your #1k1hr too. It has helped me so much!
